Join the Society for Women Environmental Professionals (SWEP-MA) on November 6 for dinner and a talk on "Our Oceans, Our Planet, Our Future" with George Buckley.

Our oceans cover some two-thirds of the Earth's surface; the earth could perhaps have been called 'planet ocean.' The oceans provide an abundance of resources and environmental services: food, transport, minerals, energy, coastal assets, pharmaceuticals, CO2 absorption and oxygen, to name a few.

As we come to depend more and more on the oceans and plan to enhance the Blue Economy of benefits, we must confront and work to lessen the significant impacts that we have had on them. The Blue Economy depends upon a viable and productive ocean for aquaculture, energy and deep sea mining.

George's last discussion of the Blue Economy, including a screening of his movie, was very popular so you won't want to miss this!

George Buckley Bio:  George Buckley and Jack Spengler started the Sustainability program at Harvard Extension School, with decades of broad experience with oceans and ocean life. George has done extensive research on land snails, freshwater clams, coral reefs, and is an expert scuba diver who has led hundreds of students to study the sea.

In 2010, The New England Office of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded the Harvard Extension School’s John Spengler and George Buckley an Environmental Merit Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of their exceptional work and commitment to the environment. The award recognizes the two as outstanding environmental advocates who have dedicated their lives toward preserving and protecting the New England region’s natural resources.

George has worked on a series of curriculum programs on coastal ecology, river ecology, the earth sciences, astronomy and science education. He has been a long-time Associate at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, working with Ruth Turner and chief scientists on some two dozen Earthwatch Expeditions. In recognition of his ocean work, George received the “Diver of the Year Award” from the Boston Sea Rovers, and with the award-winning NOVA TV program, “The Sea Behind the Dunes,” began a career in environmental filmmaking. His most recent film, "Bonaire Bonanza", produced in collaboration with in collaboration with Dutch filmmaker Edward Snijders, is a success story of good reef management on the Caribbean island of Bonaire; it won the Palme d’Or Award.

Join the Society of Women Environmental Professionals (SWEP-MA) and the Society of Professional Consultants (SPC) for a virtual event on The Empathy Dilemma: How Successful Leaders Balance People, Performance, and Personal Boundaries with Maria Ross on Thursday December 5, 3-4, PM.

Register for this online event will open in the fall.

    About the Workshop

All across the globe, organizations are becoming more human-centric. They've jettisoned old paradigms of success that center on endless overtime and constant employee sacrifice. They’ve tied success to purpose and workforce morale and helped people balance personal and professional needs as their priorities change. They’ve made shifts that are both necessary and positive. But now, those striving to be empathetic leaders and colleagues are experiencing the dark side: Taking on extra work, avoiding conflict, spending too much time on personal issues, or simply burning out from trying to balance concern for colleagues with the needs of the business. How can we remain human-focused and still maintain high performance, set personal boundaries, and avoid burning out, without being treated like villains?

In this timely talk by empathy advocate, TEDx speaker, podcaster, and strategist, Maria Ross, author of The Empathy Edge and now The Empathy Dilemma, you'll discover how empathy benefits your organization's performance and why your perception of empathy might be false and leading you astray. You'll also learn about 5 valuable pillars you can shore up to be both an effective AND empathetic leader and find more success.

    Takeaways:

    ·  DEFINE what empathy at work actually is - and more importantly, what it is NOT

    ·  DISCOVER 3 bottom-line organizational benefits of empathetic leadership and culture – through presenting relevant data and research and discussing case studies that disrupt traditional thinking. Empathy is not just good for the world, but it can be a competitive advantage. We'll walk through the financial & organizational benefits of leading with empathy.

    ·  RECOGNIZE why empathy at work is so challenging in a post-pandemic world, especially for leaders

    ·  DISCOVER and PRACTICE the Five Pillars of Effective Empathy to avoid burnout and better balance people, performance, and personal boundaries.
